One technique Dr. Berman often uses is Tumescent liposuction. This procedure uses large volumes of fluid which are instilled into the targeted area prior to the procedure. This fluid is able to loosen the fat as well as decrease bruising and post operation discomfort. Tumescent liposuction also generally results in a quicker recovery time. Almost all of Dr. Berman’s liposuction procedures are enhanced by using a laser-assisted or ultrasonic technique. SmartLipo is a technologically advanced technique to remove small areas of fat anywhere on the body (besides the face presently). Patients are put under a local anesthetic or an oral sedation. The procedure is performed directly in Dr. Berman’s office, and the recovery time is quicker than that of traditional liposuction techniques. It is a simple procedure using tumescent fluid. A very tiny incision is made (3-5mm) and a fiber optic cable is inserted into the fat zone.
Laser lights are used to melt the fat and coagulate any blood vessels. Generally, there is little to no bruising. Following that, a liposuction cannula is passed in order to remove the liquefied fat. One suture will usually close the incision. Dr. Berman allows his patients to return to showering the next day and full exercising between seven and ten days. Something very important to realize is that improvement may continue for up to six months. Dr. Berman also believes that due to the heating of the skin during the SmartLipo process, additional skin tightening occurs.
