Dr. Warren’s View of Saline Breast Augmentation
Saline implants are the only breast implants used by Dr. Warren. They come as an empty plastic (solid silicone) envelope. The envelope cannot migrate like liquid silicone. The breast implants are filled with sterile fluid directly from the IV bottle. There are no additives placed in the fluid.
Dr. Warren specializes in placing the implants “under” the pectoralis muscle. He believes this technique consistently gives a softer, more natural feel. The muscle acts to support the implant, preventing the skin from sagging over time. If there is mild to moderate sagging of the breast before surgery, most commonly a one inch incision at the edge of the areola or on the armpit crease is used. The scar from both these incisions is camouflaged and rarely interferes with breast or nipple sensation. If the breast sag too much prior to surgery, incisions on the breast may be necessary to lift the breast at the time of surgery to get a better shape.
The breasts may be sore for 2 to 7 days because of the manipulation of the muscle. Most people are able to return to light work at seven days. Driving is restricted for 10 days because of safety reasons. At first, the breast implants are too firm and riding too high; This is normal. The implants soften and settle for six to nine months before reaching their final position.
Medical complications, such as infection, bleeding and capsular contracture, in Dr. Warren‘s experience, are rare. If a complication occurs, Dr. Warren will do his utmost to resolve the problem as quickly as possible. Technical complications are also possible. These occur when implants are not placed in the correct, symmetrical position and when the size is not satisfactory to the patient. These problems are infrequent. When they occur, a small revision or size change may be necessary to correct the problem.
There are no restrictions once healing is complete. Massaging is not required. There is no reason to change implants unless the implant is leaking. If leakage occurs, the body absorbs only salt water. The exact rate of leakage is unknown, but it is very infrequent. The Mentor Corporation gives a lifetime warranty on the implant if leakage occurs. It is a small procedure to change implants.
Breast cancer rates are equal in patients with or without implants. The detection of cancer is also statistically equal. Implants will make the mammogram more difficult to read and may lead to a rare delay of diagnosis.
