Making the decision to have breast augmentation surgery is a major one – it’s in the same class as buying a new home, accepting a marriage proposal, or switching careers. There are so many things to consider: which procedure, whether to combine it with other plastic surgery procedures, which plastic surgeon, which facility, and when to have the procedure performed. After meeting Dr. Kirk Moore and his friendly, extensively trained plastic surgery staff, the decision will be an easy one.
Silicon (without an “e” on the end) is an element, like oxygen, nitrogen, copper, iron, etc. and after oxygen, is the most abundant element. It’s not found by itself, but in sand, rocks, quartz, and opals, for instance. Silicones (with the “e”) are a group of plastic substances which have silicon as one of their components. They can be liquids or gels, or can have a rubbery consistency, or a hard consistency. Silicone is used in many surgical scenarios, such as for artificial joints and facial implants. The silicone used in breast implants has a soft, resilient texture that closely resembles natural breast tissue.
The silicone implants used before the 1970s had thick shells. In the 1970s and 1980s, thinner shells were introduced but they were found to have a tendency to rupture, and this is why the FDA restricted their use in 1992, pending further research. Today’s silicone gel implants, approved by the FDA, are manufactured by two companies in California: Allergan Corp, and Mentor Corp. Complying with the FDA’s request, they will be conducting ten-year post-approval studies on about 40,000 women. A post-approval study is often requested by the FDA to gather information that can only be gathered after a product is in wide general use.
