About Dr. Merkel

Education

William D. Merkel, M.D. first visited the beautiful Grand Valley in 1974. Like so many other Grand Junction residents, he and his wife fell in love with the friendliness, comfort, and safety offered by the area. He and his family moved from Virginia in July of 1975 and established his medical practice as the first board certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon between Denver and Salt Lake City. Twenty five years later, Dr. Merkel continues to be a leading plastic and reconstructive surgeon in Grand Junction with an impeccable reputation for performing outstanding, innovative procedures with excellent results. While all of the surgeries are performed in Grand Junction, Dr. Merkel maintains satellite offices in nearby Colorado communities to better serve his pre and post operative patients.

Dr. Merkel and his staff have brought a level of sophistication to the areas of trauma surgery, correction of congenital deformities, cancer resection and reconstruction, primary care and reconstruction of burn victims, and breast reconstruction. He pioneered several innovations in the area of burn, and aesthetic surgery. He is currently working on other innovative ideas still in the developmental or experimental phase.

Dr. Merkel has a strong interest in the aesthetic improvements and quality of this community and has worked on many community projects over the years.
